Yoga Nidra for Contentment: A Mini Vacation for the Monkey Brain - Mary Flynn
Yoga Nidra translates as yogic sleep or sleep with awareness. Lucid sleeping is among the deepest possible states of full body relaxation, while still maintaining full consciousness in a deep meditative state. It is equivalent to a 3 hour nap. The practice of yoga nidra has been found to reduce tension and anxiety and bring clarity. Yoga Nidra is equivalent to a 3 hr. nap.
You’ll be lying down in a comfortable position called savasana…and all you have to do is follow the sound of my voice. And just so you know…there’s no way you can do it wrong. Each experience is unique. You should try to stay awake…but if you fall asleep…no worries…when you come back…just pick up on the sound of my voice again. During yoga nidra, the mind is kept active…in the present moment…as your body is coaxed to relax…you are just the witness. Can you imagine how great it’s going to be to take a break from what we call the “monkey brain”…that incessantly busy mind?
During yoga nidra, I will give directions that include preparation, choosing a resolve or intention, rotation of consciousness by taking a trip through the body, awareness of the breath, awareness of feelings and sensations, visualization, and conclusion.
You’ll need a comfortable place to lie down…preferably with no distractions. You may want a light blanket…as the body temperature can significantly drop during deep relaxation. Perhaps an eye pillow or eye covering to keep the light out and assist with concentration. If you have lower back issues, you want to place a cushion, bolster or rolled-up towel under your knees.
